In the UK approximately 30% of our energy consumption is for
space and water heating in buildings. Using wood fuels for
heating, this is a great opportunity to develop a new
sustainable industry from existing forestry and other biomass
resources.
Displacing consumption of fossil fuels by
wood fuels helps to counter the impacts of climate change.
Biomass generates about the same amount of carbon dioxide as
fossil fuels, but every time a new plant grows, carbon dioxide
is actually removed from the atmosphere. The net emission of
carbon dioxide will be zero as long as plants continue to be
replenished for biomass energy purposes
The biomass supply infrastructure is developing in Wales (www.woodenergybusiness.co.uk).
It is predicted that by 2010 biomass (predominately wood fuel)
will contribute 26% of the total renewable electricity and up to
225,000 MWh of renewable heat in Wales (AEA Technology Review of
Strategic Study of RE resources in Wales 2001).
The actual source of supply of biomass differs depending on the
community: log wood or thinnings from local forests, prunings
from roadsides or parks, grasses and energy crops and in some
countries residues from agriculture or food processing e.g.
nutshells or olive pits, wood chips, recycled untreated wood or
pelletising residues from wood processing. Through using these
resources a possible disposal problem can be turned into a high
quality fuel and local suppliers of wood fuels will gain extra
income and enhance local economic turnover.
Sundance Renewables felt there was a need to introduce a
cost effective biomass technology to the domestic market. Compared to
average installation costs in excess of £10,000, Sundance offers complete
systems from the Czech Republic which are under half this price, with grant
assistance of around £1500 to further reduce this cost. The two main
systems we supply are pellet boilers, and gasifying log boilers,
produced by the family run company
Atmos whose boilers have
an excellent reputation all over Europe.
We can also facilitate the installation of biomass heating and CHP for community projects.
Atmos Log Boiler
Wood boilers use wood or wooden briquettes for heating, and
these fuels are widely available at reasonably good prices.
Advantages of gasifying boilers for wood include:
-
Option to burn large
pieces of wood
-
Primary and
secondary air is also preheated to a high temperature - higher
effectiveness
-
Rotating grate
mechanics - easy handling of ash
-
The ventilator
automatically switches off when the fuel burns out.
-
Easy servicing and
cleaning
-
Ceramic combustion
space - high effectiveness
-
Large fuel container
-
Large space for ash
-
Boiler without tube
plate - easier cleaning
-
Small size and low
weight
-
High quality
The Atmos
products we supply are registered on the
Low Carbon Buildings Programme , which
awards grant for domestic biomass boiler and wood pellet stove
installations.
