'Top
women in leadership' address IWA Conference 'Putting Women in
their Place'
February 2009
Sundance Director Jan Cliff will speak alongside other top
women in leadership at an IWA Conference on 'Putting Women in
their Place' on March 6th in Cardiff.
Wales has led the world in our National Assembly. We have
equality between male and female Assembly Members. For a brief
moment in the second term we had a near parity of women in the
Welsh Cabinet. But what is the reality for most Welsh women
outside Assembly politics? Look around at business, the law,
the universities, local government, press and media, and the
trade unions and you will find very few women in leadership
positions.
It
is forty years since women burnt their bras and chained
themselves to railings. It is 30 years since Welsh women led
the march to Greenham Common. There has been progress, but the
pace is frustratingly slow.
This
conference will explore ways we can accelerate the pace. Top
women in leadership roles in Welsh life will share their
experiences and offer their thoughts on how more women can
make the contribution they deserve, and Wales needs, if our
culture and economy is to make the most of our opportunities.
The conference will have at the foreground the ‘Who runs
Wales?’ report, put together by the Equality and Human Rights
Commission. It will also explore recent the Norwegian
initiatives which aim to achieve gender parity on its business
boards.
This
conference is the culmination of the IWA’s ‘Level Up Wales’
campaign to ensure that sustained attention is given to this
vital agenda.

Sundance hit the headlines to support Welsh biodiesel industry
January 2009
Sadly three of the five biodiesel producers in Wales have
closed in the past six months. As the New Year dawned Sundance
hit the media featuring on BBC news and The Politics Show
alongside Liberal Democrat Shadow Minister for the Environment
Mick Bates AM, to raise awareness of the plight of the
biodiesel industry.
We drew attention to the failure of the UK Renewable Transport
Fuel Obligation which has allowed large fossil fuel interests
to control the biodiesel market at the expense of smaller
producers - yet another classic example of the government
messing up a situation again. They seem to have a knack to be
the problem rather than the solution in many instances. The
removal of any fuel duty on biodiesel would be a more
effective way to help small producers to survive in a
competitive fuel market - if only the Government was not in
the hands of large corporate fuel conglomerates...
