The county Voluntary sector Environment Forum, which is being facilitated by Carmarthenshire Association of Voluntary Services (CAVS), was launched at the Diplomat Hotel in Llanelli on Tuesday (December 7).  The purpose of the Forum is to improve networking opportunities and information exchange for groups working in the county.  It will also be an important Forum for raising awareness of the various environmental issues facing the county, and to encourage groups to get involved in positive action.

Over 50 people attended to hear presentations and to take part in workshops. The speakers included Merfyn Williams, the Executive Director of Cynnal Cymru – the SD Forum for Wales; Josie Coggins, Co-founder of Elemental Earth; Jan Cliff, Project Manager with Sundance Renewables, which is turning vegetable oil into car fuel in a joint scheme with Carmarthenshire County Council, and Councillor Pam Palmer, the county council’s Executive Board member for the Environment.

The four workshop sessions covered the following themes: Getting About (transport), Waste and recycling, Environmental Resources (including energy, water and air), and Conserving and enhancing the environment.  These groups discussed the issues are facing Carmarthenshire, and came up with ideas of how various agencies, and the Forum itself, should be working together to address these issues.

Sundance Receive 'Euro Solar 2004 Award'!

Sundance were awarded a 'Euro Solar Award' for our Services to Renewable Energy in the Not for Profit Sector for our 'Liquid Solar Energy’ Project.

Sundance Renewables - Text from the presentation speech given at the award ceremony in the Olympia Building in London on 19/10/2004:

CATEGORY D:  WINNER
D1 "Not for Profit Organisations”

Sundance Renewables collect liquid vegetable oil from local chip-shops, pubs, restaurants and through a domestic collection scheme set up with the Council. This used vegetable oil is processed in the first community-based biodiesel plant to be built in the UK. The business is fully compliant with all regulations governing biodiesel production and waste oil transportation and will become the first biodiesel outlet in Wales, selling this renewable fuel for cars with all duty and VAT paid. The project promotes a sustainable life-style in several ways, encouraging the responsible re-use of a potentially damaging waste and helping to provide a carbon-neutral alternative to fossil fuels for road transport.

Launch of the UK’s First Community Based Biodiesel Plant
14/10/2004

On October 14th we celebrated our official launch of the UK’s first community based biodiesel plant, giving us the opportunity to thank all the funders, supporters and friends involved in this ground breaking project.  We were joined at the launch by Edwina Hart, AM for Gower and Minister for Social Justice and Regeneration, and were presented with our Action Earth award by Roy Fowles, Area Manager of the Environment Agency Wales.

Many thanks to all who attended and for the extensive press time and coverage given to the event!

On November 1st we commenced sales of biodiesel.  Please support us by joining our Friends of Sundance scheme and contact us in advance if you wish to purchase biodiesel as our supply is in heavy demand.  If you are a producer of used vegetable oil in our area, please also get in touch with us about our free collection service!

Sundance Win Top National Environmental Award for Biodiesel Project!
13/07/2004

This year’s Environment Agency Action Earth campaign, organised by CSV (Community Service Volunteers) saw thousands of volunteers from all over the UK get involved in over 1000 environmental projects.

Sundance picked up the prize for the 'most unusual location or type of project' , with our biodiesel production plant hailed as a 'ground breaking renewable energy project', being the first community owned biodiesel plant in the UK.  The plant will be opening for production in October, when we hope to produce around 5,000 litres of biodiesel per week.
